presents update
Merry Christmas, we
gave out 70 gifts to street people today. We even gave three
gifts to the police to give to street people that wound up
in jail. Thanks to all those that helped. We ran out
of gifts, turned people away, said would try to work on
getting more. If you can give stockings of socks,
tooth paste, brushes, new or near new clothes, let me know
asap, as we want to give gifts through out the holidays,
it's never too late to give.
It looks like we have about 70 presents now all together
after we put them in gift bags. We still need more,
there are lot's of people on the streets, including
families, and single parents. Someone said that
gift bags would be better if you could get gift bags.
(update: We had a bunch of gift bags dropped off, thank...s!)
If we put gifts in gift bags, we can add oranges, candy
canes, etc. Again, thanks for your help!
It

together what we have wrapped or we put them in gift bags.
Someone said that gift bags would be better if you could get

gloves, scarves together. That if they come in gift wraps,
we can add oranges, candy canes, etc. Again, thanks for
your help!
Other needs that we
haven't got any yet:
- Heavy winter
sleeping bags for those that do sleep outside
- Baby stuff for
single mothers
And other stuff as
needed for people that you can think of, if they could come pre-wrapped
with a label on it to tell who for, male or female, child, baby, etc.

Nanaimo Network of UNN Locals
Joint
meeting
: UNN Local 510 (Nanaimo South), UNN
Local 515 (Nanaimo North)
Held @ Street Life Ministry,
156 Victoria Road, Nanaimo
Thursday, August 14, 2003
Attendees:
Robert Davies (Local
515) Bill Williams (Local 510)
Shield Sort (Local
515) Sylvia Russ Williams
(Local 510)
Bruce Ferguson (Local 510)
Meeting Summary
This was the first meeting of
the Nanaimo Network of UNN Locals. Essentially the
meeting explored ways in which the two UNN Locals in
Nanaimo can work together on common topics, support
each other in areas of particular Local interest and
coordinate what both UNN Locals are doing.
UNN Local 515 Updates
·
Local 515 is in the formative stage,
it does have a full board as a result of an
election, but is not yet incorporated.
·
The purpose of Local 515, as expressed
by the membership, is to work on projects that lead
towards self-reliance and independence.
·
Towards the goals and objectives of
self-reliance, the membership form a network of
entrepreneurs who are trying to set up a number of
businesses.
·
Local 515, while oriented towards self-reliance, will address the needs of the
community as expressed by the Local’s membership.
Future Meetings
·
There will be two
opportunities to meet with the provincial and national leadership. The
Nanaimo Network of UNN Locals need to plan the agenda for these meetings.
NEXT MEETING:
Thursday, August 28,
2003
United Native
Nations Community Office
156 Victoria Road, NANAIMO,
BC
1 PM
Common Interest Areas
Identified
The representatives from both
UNN Locals agreed that the structure of the UNN has
to respond to the reality of people, and people
should not be required to fit into an artificially
organized structure based on geography. Interests
and passions are what drive people to action, so the
development of UNN Locals of people with similar
interests is a route that both UNN Local 510 and UNN
Local 515 support.
However, there are common
issues that we need to work together on. There are
smart ways of providing for the administration of
both of the UNN Locals, and there are ways we can
increase resources (fundraising) for all of our
needs. Towards that end, the idea of an MOU was
proposed. Attached is a draft copy of the a
proposed Memorandum of Understanding between UNN
Local 510 and UNN Local 515
Our Easter Dinner went well, we had enough food. Happy Easter everyone.
While we were at the dinner the people said they need a
generator for the husband, because he's on an oxygen mask 24/7. When the
power goes out, the oxygen mask doesn't work, because he needs power. So
if you can help us get a generator for this person, let me know.
Happy Easter everyone. We're three hours from having our Easter Dinner. We tried
to look for donations of food for the dinner as we are having it on the reserve
in Gold River, BC at someone's house. Will let you know how it went when I
get home.
We are now faced with disconnection notices of our TELUS and Hydro bill, if you
can help us pay for these bills, it would be a blessing to us.
Sad news, I didn't
get the BMW, I put a hundred dollars on the car . The guy let his mechanic
look at the BMW, and the mechanic decided to keep the car. The guy didn't give
me back my hundred dollars. I'm still looking for a four cylinder, 5 stick
shift vehicle, good on gas, so I can take people shopping and to the doctor's .
Just got a phone call
from Vancouver, the guy is leasing me a brand new BMW on the 22nd from
Vancouver.
It looks like I'm
getting the car from Vancouver, BC, it's a Toyota Corolla. The car will be
looked at today, a cd player will be installed too.
I have a couple of
options now. The fellow from the mainland has a vehicle for 300. I would just
have to find a way to get to the vehicle. The second option is there maybe a
vehicle here in Gold River that I might be able to buy. I have to await for the
person to call. Will let you know of what happens, and which vehicle I will get.
Still haven't heard
from the person on the mainland about a vehicle, but as we find out so will you.
We are looking for a generator for someone on the reserve who needs power all
the time, because he wears an oxygen mask all the time. When the power
goes out, this person needs power for his oxygen mask. So if you can help
us get a generator, let me know. He also needs another water tank, because
his tank is too small for the size of his family, and the family needs beds too.
Gold
River, BC Canada is a remote area, and it was suggested that we should have a
circus come to town for a change. If you know of a circus company that can come
to our town, it would be a blessing for the community. Let us know!

Also, just found
out that someone on the mainland (Vancouver) may help me get a vehicle. Will
keep you posted.
My van broke down
when I took people to Port Alberni, BC to a basketball tournament. The
tranny went, and there were gasket leaks in the oil and gas tank. I
decided to leave it the the junk yard, because it would be too much to fix.
So I am looking for a 4 cylinder, 5 stick shift vehicle, that is good on gas,
and can handle long distance driving. I drive people to Campbell River, BC
from Gold River, BC so they can do their shopping or I take people to their
doctor's appointment.

I need a better car, up to
5 years old, but not older than 10 years old. I prefer all wheel
drive, 4 cylinder, about 1.6 litre engine, tinted windows in the back, as well as passenger windows,
and a standard/ 5 gears. I have a van, and find it a little expensive to
drive if I'm just going to Campbell River, BC, which is 89 kl from Gold River,
BC. I drive people 89 kl
for shopping or I take them to the doctors, which works
out to be 178 kl a trip. Sometimes I do two
trips in a day. I drive people from the reserve to Gold River, BC. I also drive people elsewhere on Vancouver Island or I
pick them up anywhere on the Island too if they phone me to pick them up.
I need a car that has good shocks and struts, and a vehicle that can handle off
road, because some roads are gravel. I drive people to places like Tahsis,
Woss, Zeballos, or pick them up from these location.
We did get the van,
and later had trouble with it, the fuel pump went, so had to be fixed. At
the same time we had other things done on it, such as the muffler, pipes, new
spark plugs, spark plug wires. The van runs quietly now, but now I found
out that I need to get a new timing belt, and the other belts on it, as well as
there is a small leak somewhere. So I'm bringing in the van to get a new
timing belt, and I'm getting them to look at where the oil leak may come from.
Once I get these things done, I may bring it in to a used car dealer to see if I
can trade it in for a four cylinder van, standard. If not, then I'll see
if I can trade it in for a standard station wagon.
Just found out that
we may not get the van, because it may not be in proper working order. So
still need your help on getting a car. A van would be good to get, but I'm
looking for a 4 cylinder, 5 stick shift vehicle, a station wagon perhaps.
On Saturday November
30, 2008 I hope to get a van. I would like to thank those that put their
efforts in helping me find a vehicle that is suitable for me to use. A
couple is helping us get a van if the van is in good shape, and that it doesn't
need any repairs. I drive members of our native community to and from
Campbell River, BC for shopping and I drive them to appointments in Campbell
River and surrounding regions. This is my way of helping those that need
help get driven to Campbell River and the surrounding regions. I just pray
that we are able to get this van on Saturday.

BIRTHDAY!
It's Bill's birthday September 15th.
Christmas is just around the corner, and we are
looking for people that can help us gather Christmas
presents to give out to those that are less
fortunate. Ages from baby to seniors at our
reserve in Gold River. If you can help us, let
me know! Also, I was planning on putting on a
Christmas dinner with a Christmas service at our
reserve, and they have about 120 people there.
If you can help us get the turkeys, potatoes,
vegetables, and desserts, let me know ASAP!
Need engine block brackets soon, they are
rusted badly and need new ones. They hold up the engine, and they will
cost 491.67 in total. Midas said that I could just get the rear mounts
first, because they are the worst, and they will cost 243.69. If you can
help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated, because I help those that
need rides from Tsaxana to town in Gold River, or to Campbell River.
Every year we give
out presents to people and this year will be no different. In Tsaxana
there are 52 houses, and some are duplexes. There are under 200 people
in Tsaxana, I'll know the exact figure next week. There are about 50 -
60 kids, maybe more, maybe less. I'll know more on how many kids are
in Tsaxana next week. If you can help with gifts, and I really don't
want to be giving out the same gift to everyone like gloves.
Email
me if you want or can help.
Also, we'll need wrapping paper, or if you decide to wrap it yourself, then
we ask that you label it so we know who to give it to.
We are now gathering

Wheel bearings have been fixed now,
and other things that had to be fixed since then was
the exhaust manifold and pipe. It has been
headaches more than anything to fix one thing or
another with this car. Now I'm hoping that I
won't have to do any repairs next month.
Things we want to concentrate
on is getting a new computer, because the one we
have is broken down.

Métis Harvesting, Powley Decision
The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in
R
v
Powley
on the Aboriginal right of Métis to hunt for food outside the
regulatory regime of Provincial legislation. These communal rights will be
established by negotiation or further Court action. In order to prepare for the
future we need your participation in providing valuable information that will
assist us to identify historic Métis communities, modern-day Métis communities,
Métis harvesting practices, and land use patterns. Your participation may be
critical to your future rights to harvest.

CHRISTMAS DINNER
For our Christmas Dinner, we are asking for at least 25
turkeys, because we are expecting 450 - 500 people.
The Christmas Dinner will be at the Quesnel Gym 421 Franklin Street,
Nanaimo, BC. The Quesnel Administration wants Street Life

back once they see that we left the gym the way we left it. We
pay 55.00 dollars for the rental of the gym. Lastly, School
District 68 will be lending us tables and chairs for the dinner at
no cost. All we have to pay is 114.00 for transporting the
table there and back to School District 68. So if you can help
us financially with this. Please let me know ASAP

van to transport 65 tables and 500 stackable chairs.

me know. Thanks! Another department of School District
68 is paying for the transporting the tables and chairs from School
District 68 to the church and picking up the tables after we finish
